A new trend will be emerging within the construction industry green retrofits of existing buildings. Helical Piers and Micropiles are a strong solution they are installed at intervals around the perimeter of the existing foundation at affected locations. Independent of the structure, the piles are extended to depths which can sustain the load requirement.
Helical piers or screw piles can be used in most soil conditions. Helical piers do not vibrate while being installed nor do they create any spoils to be removed from the site, which make them advantageous in many applications. Micropiles are used when high loads or bedrock embedment are necessary. Micropiles involve drilling a hole in the soil or rock and placing a steel bar in it (say a Diwydag bar) and grouting it into place. Specially engineered brackets are attached at the ends of the piles and secured to the existing foundation.
